In 2020 it will be 500 years since the Portuguese navigator Fernando de Magallanes first arrived in the Strait that joins the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Five centuries for a feat carried out in an unparalleled point on the planet.

Two world biosphere reserves account for its rich biodiversity, and dozens of colonizing nationalities, of its cultural capital. In 1961, the Technical University of the State of Chile created a headquarters in Punta Arenas and began with Engineering courses and then moved on to Engineering in Execution careers.

On October 26, 1981, a decree made this institution the state and public University of Magallanes, the only one in the Region. It offers 32 professional and 22 technical careers in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and Porvenir, and research, conservation and extension in the Omora Ethnobotanical Park in Puerto Williams. Since 2014, in the Aysén region, there is a new Center with ten study plans for the inhabitants of Coyhaique and its surroundings. For the University of Magallanes, its community is important, which is why it has signed agreements with rural communes, indigenous peoples, public and private companies; It has a Museum of Remembrance, a library open to the public, an auditorium for artistic and cultural extension, and an open radio and television channel.

The University of Magallanes is located in a unique, unrepeatable and privileged territory: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn and Antarctica are attractive natural laboratories for scientists from all over the world, and perfect for understanding global changes. Here Human Population in High Latitude is investigated; Biodiversity and Environment in Extreme and Cold Ecosystems, Energies and Atmospheric Sciences.
