goals

The main objective of the Doctorate in Theology program at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is to carry out scientific research that results in the preparation of a doctoral thesis, which constitutes an advance in any of the theological disciplines.

Applicant Profile

The applicant must have obtained, with a grade not less than 5.5 (or its equivalent), the academic degree of Bachelor of Theology (equivalent to a master's degree) awarded by a canonically erected Faculty of Theology, or by an equivalent institution, of according to the judgment of the Graduate Committee. In the case of priests and religious, a letter from their superior endorsing the application to the program. In addition, they must accredit, before the director of the program, the following linguistic competences: a) instrumental use of Latin and Biblical Greek; b) reading comprehension of English and c) reading comprehension of another modern language between French, German and Italian.

Graduate profile

The graduate will be able to position himself in the scientific community with a good command of the scientific research method proper to theology, verified through the development of a thesis, which implies mastery of the sources of theology (above all of Sacred Scripture and Tradition, with emphasis on classical thought) and a historically solid, hermeneutically and philosophically critical perspective. With these skills, from their own identity, the graduate will be able to respond to the challenges of today's world, to understand dogma and evangelization, as well as to communicate their knowledge to the scientific community.

Lines of investigation

Systematic or dogmatic theology
It has privileged the study of the history of dogma.

Patristic theology:
It has transformed the Faculty into a Latin American reference in this matter, due to its Patristic Seminars and its Master's Degree in Theology with a mention in Patristics.

Fundamental theology
The most recent accentuation, privileges the subjects of the science of religion.
