goals

To train scientists with a holistic vision and skills to autonomously develop basic research motivated by application, with a strong conceptual and methodological component, which allows them to identify and propose creative and sustainable solutions in the field of aquatic systems: from the deep ocean to Altiplano systems, in a context of global change.
Graduates will have competencies to lead and integrate specialized to multidisciplinary research teams, communicate relevant and pertinent scientific information to their peers, decision makers and the community in general.

Applicant Profile

Applicants must have competencies in aspects such as motivation, tolerance to frustration, problem solving, marked scientific interest and clarity in professional projection in the area. In addition to the requirements established by the General Regulations for Postgraduate Teaching for applying for a Master's and Doctorate, the Program raises the following requirements:
Hold a Master's or Bachelor's degree in different areas of Sciences related to Aquatic Systems: Biologists, Marine Biologists, Marine Ecologists, Aquaculture Engineers, Oceanographers and others Professions and degrees in related areas, both national and foreign.
It is desirable to demonstrate research experience through scientific publications, conferences, and participation in projects.

Graduate profile

The graduate of the Doctorate program in Applied Sciences mention Aquatic Systems at the University of Antofagasta, will have skills to generate and integrate frontier knowledge to solve problems associated with basic and applied science in aquatic systems in a sustainable way, forming research teams and communicating scientific knowledge to society Graduate competencies:
1. Demonstrates deep conceptual and methodological management for the formulation of scientific questions, with a reflective and critical attitude based on the advancement of knowledge of aquatic systems associated with the ocean-desert-high plateau interaction.
2. Identifies, characterizes and evaluates problems and phenomena that can be addressed through the application of scientific knowledge in the field of aquatic systems associated with the ocean-desert-plateau interaction.
3. Proposes creative solutions to problems related to aquatic systems, which include an adequate assessment of sustainability in aquatic systems.
4. Integrates and directs interdisciplinary research teams, contributing from his training as a scientist to solving problems in the field of aquatic systems.
5. Autonomously and creatively formulates and develops scientific research projects generating new knowledge applicable to solving problems in aquatic systems, in a context of sustainability.
6. Communicates scientific information and research results, adapting to academic and non-academic contexts, promoting their transfer to society to contribute to sustainable development.

Lines of investigation

● Patterns and Processes in Aquatic Ecology. This line of research contemplates the marine and freshwater aspects of Ecology in relation to the levels of organization of Population and Community Ecology, and its interfaces with Genetic, Evolutionary and Biogeographic processes. Including interactions at the parasitic and epidemiological level.
● Management of Aquatic Resources. This line of research studies the basic and applied aspects of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Biotechnology in the marine and freshwater fields.
● Environment and Conservation of Aquatic Systems. This line of research focuses on environmental and conservation application aspects in marine and freshwater environments in the following thematic areas: Ecotoxicology / Pollution, Invasive Species, Paleo oceanography / Sedimentology, Modeling, Extreme and desert environments, Biological Oceanography.
