Dialogue between the Council of Rectors and parliamentarians continues
New meeting of Rectors with parliamentarians on budget issues and reconstruction of university heritage.
The University of Santiago was on this occasion the host in the fourth meeting that the Council of Rectors has held with parliamentarians in less than 30 days with a clear and forceful objective: the reconstruction of the university heritage and the assurance of student aid and other items of facing the 2011 budget. The legislative agenda has been constant, beginning at the end of July with a meeting with the senators of the Finance and Housing commissions and continuing with the Mixed Budget Subcommittee No. 4 of the Chamber of Deputies.
"The Universities of the Council of Rectors represent a heritage of immense value for society and it is our commitment to work permanently to establish an agenda that includes the issues that we have been raising since the beginning of this year. Since February 27, our efforts have been patents: we have raised our Universities with an enormous economic and human effort, facing a debt of billions of pesos that, if we continue like this, will inevitably lead us to a greater financial crisis ", said the Rector of the University of Santiago, Juan Zolezzi. "Today more than ever we must establish a country commitment to Higher Education. These days, regarding the Casen Survey, there has been talk of the wide inequality in access to Higher Education and in overcoming this gap the Universities of the Council Rectors play a fundamental role, and we cannot ignore this inequality when thinking about a long-term commitment to public higher education in this country, "he concluded.
The deputies, Messrs. Pepe Auth S., Carlos Montes C., Pablo Lorenzini B. and Alberto Robles P. were present at the meeting, and the Council was represented by the Rector of the University of Santiago, Mr. Juan Zolezzi C ., by the Rector of the University of Valparaíso, Mr. Aldo Valle A. and by the Rector of the University of Talca Mr. Álvaro Rojas M.
